Poems from No Coraço do Inimigo (In the Heart of the Enemy)
by Rafael Marques

(July 7, 2000) Freelance journalist Rafael Marques accused Angolan President José Eduardo dos Santos of perpetuating corruption, dictatorship, and a bloody civil war in Angola. Marques has been arrested several times for his work, most recently on October 16, 1999. He was charged with defamation for an article published on July 3, 1999 called "The Dictatorship's Lipstick." In March 2000, he was convicted of defamation and sentenced to one year in prison. The sentence was suspended pending his appeal, allowing him to avoid prison. However, Marques is banned from leaving Angola. These eight poems by Marques, published below, were translated from the original Portuguese to English by the author.

Butterfly

The butterfly is also born
in a chaotic country.
It celebrates its flight
and its short existence.
Its cycle of life
rests on the flowers.
Beautiful and short-lived
it seduces your vision of space
bringing a rebirth of hope
in its ultimate flight.

Mother Victory

Come mamma
with your pride
at seeing your son
in love with a gun
walking as a conqueror
Come mamma
for the farewell
As you come mamma
bring the hopes of other mothers
in your pride
just stay on their side
as the boys grow into soldiers
and reach up their hands for blood
and victory
touching each other's hearts with bullets
Come mamma to a safe haven
while the sons carry their guns
there are no more mothers nor children on earth
and your boy is somewhere fighting
against his mother's prayer
Come mamma
touch peace and all its flowers

Rafael Marques: The danger of speaking out

In the Heart of the Enemy

I want to be the word
the smile
in the heart of the enemy
I want to be the freedeom
at the very edge
of limits and rights
Listening to the whispering of evil
ceasing little by little
in the heart of the enemy

Afro Symphony

The tears
and shame
of not having taken a seat
in the orchestration of modern civilization
still bleed
in the percussion of the drums

Gift to an Unknown Love

Shall I offer you
affection
in the intimacy
with rhythms
of nature's instrumental sounds
singing
the beauty
the world has never seen before?

I am Africa

I am Africa
whirling in a cycle
of lost generations
I am the failure
in joining hands to brains
But the feet still carry on
eager in the strength of the land
I am magical
I am divine
I am rich
but yet slave to my own ignorance
I am mother
to a people defeated by their own egoism
I am Africa
the strength of the land

Search

I have searched in words
for marching soldiers
with insurrection messages
in a parade of verse
with no rumor or blood
I have searched
in the light of survival
for a spiritual reconciliation
for Angola's enduring tragedy
I have searched
beyond the limits of being
Insofar
That I have only been finding horizons
and a sleeping youth
May the children
in their outcry
break through the spell
of such a mortal sleep.

I Have Seen Children

I have seen children
throwing garbage in gardens
where they happily played before
I have seen children
Playing with explosives
innocent and victims
I have seen children
huddling together in a hole
generating warmth
in the cold destitute nights
I have seen children
who have never been so
I have seen the distance
between parenthood and childhood
I have seen
in the tears of a child
a drop of justice and forgiveness
for the world that ignores her.
